To this end the learning experience should be a model that is easy to duplicate and transfer to an individual or classroom setting for future application.

Learning Objectives

In order to master the learning goal for the class, students will need to reach a rather broad range of objectives:

  • Learners will decide to improve their skills in learning fluency
  • Learners will cooperate and support their co-learners as a means of practicing interpersonal fluency
  • Learners will identify their strengths and weaknesses in learning fluency through completion of a survey.
  • Learners can deconstruct the process by which they developed their strengths in learning fluency.
  • Learners will describe the impact of learning fluency on their academic success
  • Learners will compile a list of resources that are helpful to the mastery of one or more elements of learning fluency.
  • Learners will create a personalized learning strategy for 1 or more aspects of learning fluency.
  • Learners will use the OODA loop [Figure 1] relative to the 5 aspects of learning fluency as a model of strategy development
  • Learners will share the strategy they have developed for mastering an aspect of learning fluency.
  • Learners will practice all 5 aspects of learning fluency throughout the instructional event.

Learning Activity Outline

  • Activity: Introductions (to begin establishing a learning community)
    • Can be done through preferred medium of writing, speaking, or digital posting
  • Activity: Course Overview
    • Introduce students to the OODA loop and the five learning fluencies inviting them to observe their experience in the course to see which element is most natural and most uncomfortable. They will be using all 5 aspects of learning fluency in some way throughout the night.
  • Activity: Skills test – in depth survey on learning fluency aspects identified by the literature.
    • Provides a more concrete or objective understanding of which aspects of learning fluency are least developed.
  • Activity: Learning Strengths
    • 5 groups of 4 students based on top strengths
    • Students will discuss and record on a presentation board what they think makes them good at their common learning fluency and how it helps them with learning.
    • These elements are further explored to see how students developed their skills.
    • A list of resources and activities are brainstormed for others who want to learn the skills.
    • The group will then present their learning fluency, how it has helped them, what elements are included, how they can be learned, and their list of resources.
  • Activity: Strategy design
    • Instructions – overview of the OODA loop and how it has already been used for observation and orientation. Now is the time to decide what to do!
    • With a focus on using their stronger elements of learning fluency, students will outline a process for mastering one of their weaker aspects of learning fluency. (e.g. using interpersonal fluency to ask questions of other students and teachers about research methods – an aspect of information fluency.
    • Students outline their own process from the night and select 1 or 2 aspects of learning fluency to focus on for the rest of the night.
    • Students selecting similar objectives, or students who wish may work together.
  • Activity: Sharing strategies
    • Allows students to see other approaches
    • Posted to an online wiki and/or presented to the class
  • Activity: Closing Inspiration
    • Details on access to the digital learning tools.
    • Offer of additional support
    • Recommendation for next steps
    • Announcement of survey coming out in a few months.
  • Activity: Closing Survey
    • May be done through twitter or text bubbles
    • What will you do with what you have learned tonight?
    • What elements of this course were helpful for you?
    • Name and email of a friend who should take this course
